Jealousy Helper → Retroactive jealousy
A retroactive jealousy app for the spiral about your partner's past
It has a name, which you may have just learned: retroactive jealousy, the loop about a partner's past. The exes, the stories, the numbers. The mental movies that play during dinner, or worse. Re-reading old messages looking for something that will hurt you, and finding it, and looking again anyway. You trust them. Knowing that doesn't stop it. If that's tonight, this page is for the next five minutes, not your whole history.
What helps in the moment
The RJ spiral is a body event before it's a thought event: the stomach drop arrives first, then the movies, then the urge to check or ask. That's why "just stop thinking about it" fails: thinking is the vehicle the spiral drives. Jealousy Helper's session starts under the thoughts:
- Paced breathing built on the long exhale, the fastest signal your nervous system accepts as "stand down."
- Then the protective question: what is this feeling guarding? With RJ it's rarely about their past at all. It's about your place, your enoughness, a comparison a part of you keeps running to keep you safe.
- One concrete step out, including, explicitly, "not asking the question tonight."
No account, no chatbot, nothing you write leaves your phone. The crisis session is free, with no trial tricks.
What this app is not
Honesty matters more than a download: retroactive jealousy can take an obsessional, OCD-patterned form: intrusive images, compulsive questioning, reassurance that never lands. That pattern responds well to ERP therapy (exposure and response prevention) with a trained professional, and no app treats it, this one included. Jealousy Helper is in-the-moment support for the spiral itself, and it works fine alongside therapy. If your loop is months deep and eating your sleep, do both.
The two questions people ask
- "Is there a cure?" Not in the way the word promises. What exists: interrupting the loop earlier (body first), understanding what it protects, and, for the obsessional form, ERP. Anyone selling certainty is selling.
- "Am I crazy for this?" No. It's common enough to have a name, a research literature, and whole communities. The shame is part of the loop, not evidence about you.
